As all women know, our stomach is the first place those extra sneaky kilos start to show. If you’re worried about excess flab and bloating, and constantly buying clothes to disguise your muffin top, then we have some new tips for you.

According to Kate Adams, founder of the Flat Tummy Club, you can lose kilos in just one week. Here are some cunning diet and exercise secrets that may help you achieve those flat abs you’ve always dreamed of.

“When I landed my dream job as a diet and health book publisher several years ago, I was absolutely thrilled”, she says.

“Unfortunately, even though I had all the latest weight-loss information at my fingertips I became so wrapped up in my ambitions and deadlines that I stopped looking after myself and piled on 2st.

“All of a sudden, I found I couldn’t get my jeans done up and I had a substantial, stubborn spare tyre sitting around my middle”, Adams continues.

Sound familiar? Adams was so tired of opting out of diets and those perpetual feelings of frustration that “desperate to make a change, I pulled together all my favourite strands of knowledge from across my ten years of health publishing and formulated my own weight-loss plan. A plan that worked so well at reducing bloat and excess weight that I lost 7lb in the first week and 2st in six months.

“Even better, the excess pounds and unattractive muffin top have stayed away — I’ve been back in my old jeans for almost two years and even feel happy wearing a bikini.

“By popular demand, I started to share my diet and exercise tips, first with friends and family and then through a website I set up called the Flat Tummy Club”, says Adams.

1. Examine your habits

According to Kate, addressing why you over-eat is as important to the weight-loss process as the foods you consume. Kate advises that you should carry a small notebook and write down everything you consume as well as any exercise you undertake. She suggests writing in detail, and including where you eat, what feelings you associate with certain foods and so on. When you begin to understand why you’re overeating or eating unhealthily, it’ll be easier to change your habits.

Concurrently, you should continuously chart your weight and measurements, and even take photographs of yourself as you go. As excruciating as this may initially be, you’ll be able to assess your performance and motivate yourself as you notice progress.

2.Diet Rules

Follow these simple rules in order to eradicate that spare tyre you have hanging around your waist!

- Eat three meals a day
- Never skip meals. This leads to low sugar, and low sugar = poor judgement and lack of self control.
- Keep drinking! Try hot water with lemon in the morning to clear out your digestive system and continue drinking water throughout the day. Herbal tea is great, too!
- Avoid bread at all costs, but if you’re really desperate for a hit of carbs opt for sourdough.
- Avoid overly salty or excessively sugary foods.
- Eat slowly and in a relaxed environment – this will help you notice when you’re full.
- Be mindful of your portion sizes.

3. Five foods that will flatten your stomach

Oats: Easy to digest, rich in filling, complex carbohydrates and can help you eat less while reducing bloating.
Natural Yoghurt: This snack is full of protein, and contains bloat-reducing properties. And, with a bit of honey or fruit added, it won’t even feel like a ‘diet’ food. Yum!

MUFAs: Monounsaturated (plant-based) fatty acids (MUFAs) are healthy fats. Foods such as avocados, olives, nuts, seeds and dark chocolate fall into this category, and are also great for the heart.

Green Tea: Loaded with antioxidants, green tea is great for general wellbeing, and new studies suggest that green tea may even help to regulate blood sugar — which will reduce those sugar cravings!

Cucumber: Cucumber relieves fluid retention and is fibre-rich.

4. Relax!

By relaxing each day you stop cortisol production, which is a hormone that is released when we are stressed, and directs our bodies to store fat centrally. A good night’s sleep is also essential for weight loss.
