Women discover after 39 years they were switched at birth

It’s taken 39 years for two mums to discover their baby girls were accidentally switched at birth and have grown up with the wrong families.

Two baby girls - Tatyana and Valentina - were born on the same day in March in 1978 at the same hospital in Moldova, Europe.

But after nurses took the babies for a bath they were mistakenly given back to the wrong mothers.

“Both mums left the hospital feeling blessed with their little miracles, full of joy and happiness, neither mother noticed anything out of the ordinary,” Anatoliy Lashtur, who grew up as Tatyana’s brother, wrote on a Gofundme page.

In the days that followed the birth it turns out that both babies were extremely unsettled but neither mum thought anything of the behaviour.

It wasn’t until Tatyana’s family were looking at moving to the US in 1999 that they started hearing rumours about a mistake make at the hospital.

“My parents were determined more than ever to find the other family, so they travelled to Moldova and with the help of our childhood neighbour, they finally found the other mum,” Anatoliy wrote.

The neighbour was certain that one girl physically looked like she belonged to the other family, and vice versa, and in August this year, was able to give them Valentina’s full name.

They found Valentia on Facebook and after checking her age and birthplace and getting her to send some baby photos, they noticed the family resemblance.

It took 39 years after the mix up for the switch to be confirmed as a DNA test revealed Valentina was actually Anatoliy’s sister. And the families have now finally been able to meet.

“We just cried realizing how many years have past, how many precious moments we have missed,” Anatoliy writes.

“That day was the first time we had the opportunity to see our birth sister Valentina and hug each other, cry together.

“It was also the first time my sister Tatyana had the opportunity to hug and cry with her birth family.”
