Beaming Turia Pitt shares first family photo with newborn son

After giving birth to a bouncing baby boy last week, Turia Pitt and her fiance Michael Hoskin are settling into life with a newborn.

Turia, who captured Australia’s heart with her strength and resilience after suffering severe burns to over 60 per cent of her body, shared her first photo of the new family to Instagram to mark her baby’s first week of life.

“Santa came early to the Hoskin residence this year,” she wrote alongside of photo of the couple beaming with son Hakavai strapped to Michael’s chest.

“Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Mum and baby are happy and healthy (and Michael looks like the genie from Aladdin). We are slightly sleep deprived but stoked!”

She added in her email newsletter that, "Michael and I have been BLOWN AWAY by all the support and love we've received since Hakavai arrived last week.

"We are totally wrapped up in this epic little newborn bubble - where we're happy to stay for a while!"

Turia, 30, has been sharing her pregnancy journey on social media and her blog, where she explained that she wasn't nervous about giving birth, but rather trying to 'reframe' the way she looked at the process, so that she could see it in an empowering rather than frightening way.

"With any big change approaching," she wrote on her blog, "There’s a certain element of uncertainty. And when you know that you’re going to experience pain, that can be pretty scary.

"But I’m not looking at it that way."

The author and motivational speaker said she used the same technique when approaching the multiple surgeries she had to undergo after she suffered horrific burns as a result of becoming trapped in a fire while running a marathon in 2011.

"I write a list of all the bad things that could happen – it’s going to hurt, I don’t know if I can do it, what if I can’t handle the pain," she said.

"Then I write a list of all the good things – how grateful I am to still be here, to have a beautiful partner like Michael, and to get to experience this. How cool it will be to meet my son.

"Then I’ve got a choice how I look at it. I could look at it in the negative way, or the empowering way."
