World's biggest pearl revealed after being hidden for 10 years

A Filipino fisherman handed in what might just be the biggest pearl on earth ever found.

The man from Puerto Princesa on Palawan Island, had been hiding the enormous natural pearl under his bed for 10 years and rediscovered it when he was moving house.

Believed to have been formed inside a giant clam, the pearl got caught on his boat’s anchor. The man had no idea what his boat had come across until he dove down to dislodge the anchor.

According to the Guardian, he had been keeping the 34kg pearl hidden in his bedroom as a good luck charm and would touch it before leaving on a fishing trip.

After all these years, he decided it was time to dust it off and expose it for the world to see.

The Palawan man handed the 20 cm wide and 67 cm long pearl (almost the size of a standard pillow) over to his aunt, Aileen Cynthia Maggay-Amurao, who works for the government as a local tourism officer on the island and couldn’t believe her eyes when she first saw it.

The pearl’s owner didn’t realise the object’s potential value until he handed it over, and if found to be real, it could be worth more than $100 million!

With his permission, his auntie passed the pearl on to the mayor who thought it would be a great tourist attraction for city displayed in the atrium of the New Green City Hall in Puerto Princesa.

Maggay-Amurao posted an image of the gigantic pearl toFacebook in order to seek help from experts to weigh in on the peal’s authenticity.

“So far based on our research in the web we cannot find any recorded article about this kind and as big as this size,” she said.

If it is the real deal, the pearl would be five times the size of the world’s current 6.4kg record-holding pearl, which was found in 1939 by local divers in Brooke’s Point in Palawan.

Known as the Pearl of Lao Tzu, in 2003 it was valued at $93 million.

One can only imagine the value of this insane sized pearl knowing the true value of its predecessor.

What a rare beauty!
