Aussie bodybuilder eats his daughter’s placenta to 'make gains'

New father Aaron Curtis didn’t just bring his baby home from the hospital, but his partner’s placenta, or afterbirth, as well… and then ate it.

The Australian bodybuilder kept the placenta in the fridge for a week, before frying it up and wolfing it down – all the in the hope of 'making some gains'.

In the interest of over sharing, he filmed himself doing it all.

“With the birth of my first child, I thought I would consume the organ that provided her with life during the pregnancy in the hope of making some gains,” he explained.

“After waiting more than a week with this placenta in the fridge, I thought I better cook it and wash off some of the slime before I eat it… to minimise the chance of dying,” he said.

After cooking some of the placenta on a hot grill, he continued: “I’m starting with a little bit, just to reduce the chance of getting botulism or something.”

After he finished chewing on a piece he said, “Tastes like liver I think. It’s not too dry in the middle. Bit over done.”

Finishing the dish, a friend off-camera asked Mr Curtis if he would be frying up any more of the leftover placenta.

At this point, Mr Curtis's partner was quick to jump in, saying: “No, I'm putting my foot down.”

It looked like his partner was not the only one disgusted with the meal, with many voicing their opinions on Mr Curtis's Facebook page.

'Congratulations on officially becoming a cannibal,' wrote a fan.

'I thought this was all a joke. Now I'm about to vomit and never want to speak to [him] again,' another fan said.

He is far from the first (and hardly the last) to have a stab at consuming the placenta. One woman even started a business making placenta soups and dried placenta capsules.

But are there any real benefits to eating placenta?

Well, according to traditional Chinese medicine, there are a lot of benefits – for the mother. It can restore iron levels and other nutrients lost during childbirth, and according to some can help stave off the baby blues.
