Last November it was decided that Melania Trump wouldn’t be joining her husband in the White House until their 10-year-old son Barron finished his school year in June.
However that plan may now be up in the air after a source close to the family hinted that Melania could decide to stay in the couple’s New York penthouse indefinitely instead.
"They will reevaluate toward the end of the school year if they will keep this arrangement or if Melania and Barron will move to Washington," the insider told US Weekly.
"They could go either way right now. They will ultimately do what's best for Barron."
The current idea is that Melania and Barron will travel the 300 kilometres south to Washington every weekend, but that doesn’t appear to have happened this week.
Protests over President Trump’s new immigration orders in New York reportedly changed Melania’s travel plans.
The mum-of-one said on the campaign trail that she didn’t want to spend more than a week apart from her husband at any one time, but less than two weeks into his presidency it seems that hasn’t been able to hold.
While it’s quite unprecedented for the President and First Lady to live separately, Melania has always stressed that her duties as a mother will always take first priority.
And although their current home may not have the status that the White House boasts, their NYC penthouse is nothing if not luxurious.
The US$100 million pad sprawls across three floors and is decorated in marble and 24K gold features.
Living apart also doesn’t seem to be fazing the new President too much either, with Trump saying that he isn’t finding the distance difficult “because I end up working longer”.
