Fans question if Gary from Chicago is fake

It was the heart-warming moment that stole the show at the Oscars. A bus full of incredulous tourists were herded into the auditorium and given the opportunity to meet some of the most famous people on the planet.

One woman, Shelly, was visibly shaking while holding her iPhone, another man, Gary “from Chicago” was unbelievably chuffed to hold Mahershala Ali’s newly won Oscar.

It was a touching occasion, everyone was moved, some might even have shed a tear. But was it all fake?

That’s what some people are claiming on social media, and after watching it back, they might just have a point.

“This is for real, we spent many weeks and thousands of dollars trying to get this done,” host Jimmy Kimmel reassures us as the group approaches the theatre.

Gary, the hero of the show, seems to know exactly where he needs to go when the group enters the room.

He then introduces himself as “Gary from Chicago,” and looks sheepish when Kimmel then asks him, “where are you from?” – almost as though he blurted out his line too early… (Or because Kimmel asked him something he had already said.)

He also seems incredibly fixated on his phone, rather than Kimmel. Suspicious? It’s hard to say. The rest of the Twittersphere are believers, saying if the tourists were paid actors, they deserve an Oscar themselves!
