Python devours a possum in crazy snaps

Photos have emerged of a sneaky Python devouring a native Ringtail Possum alongside Byron Bay’s iconic lighthouse walk and we just can't stop looking.

And when we say devour, we mean straight-up scoffing the poor possum a whole lot quicker than it takes to make your way to the lighthouse itself.

Passersby Simone and Michelle Hunjak took the snaps and then forwarded them on to the Wildlife Conservation Co organisation.

Michelle, a Sydney-sider who was visiting Byron Bay on holiday spoke to 9News and told them that she and her sister Simone were en-route to the lighthouse when the pair spotted the 1.4-metre reptile consuming his lunch.

"I really love snakes so it was amazing to see the feeding in person. I had no idea they would be able to eat something like that,' she told the news outlet.

"I was more intrigued and excited rather than scared."

Head reptile keeper with the Australian Reptile Park, Dan Rumsey, told 9News it is very common to see pythons eating animals that are larger in size.

"They aren't venomous but they have teeth, so they'll use their teeth and their constrictions to consume their prey. It's pretty common for pythons to feed on possums, as larger food items are more beneficial so they don't have to eat as regularly,' he said.
