Waleed's powerful point about that Muslim violence video

Public figures have come out in droves to condemn a video from a radical Australian Islamic group spruiking violence against women.

And The Project host Waleed Aly is among them, but he had an interesting point to make on last night’s show.

The practicing Muslim and Gold Logie winner said, “It’s infuriating, it’s also infuriating that those views exist within the Muslim community even if it is a radical group.

“The denunciation from the Muslim community has been really strong and swift all day… but the other element in this is that’s not just a statement that was made in crisis.”

Waleed went on to explain that a video featuring a number of prominent Imams was made over a year ago that strongly condemns domestic violence, and encourages victims to speak out and seek help from relevant specialists.

Playing a segment of it, one Imam is heard saying, “There is absolutely no grounds for a man to inflict physical harm, emotional harm, or any other type of harm or violence upon a woman.”

“The message I have for Muslims who commit domestic violence is that you are in complete violation with what the Prophet Muhammad's last sermon represents,” another Imam said.

The point Waleed was making being that “if that [video] got the publicity that these jerks got, them maybe we would have a different sort of conversation.”

Very interesting indeed.
