Graduation proposal goes horribly wrong

A lot of planning and preparation goes into the perfect proposal. I mean, it’s a moment the happy couple will cherish for the rest of their lives, so you really want to make it special.

But unfortunately for one young man, it all went sour this week after he interrupted his girlfriend’s graduation ceremony to get down on one knee.

Assel was on stage in her academic gown and had just been called forward to accept her degree at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, when her boyfriend Ibragim, came up the stairs.

Holding a giant bouquet of flowers, the 22-year-old starts by reciting a couple if lines from song For The Rest Of My Life, before saying, “For the rest of my life, I’ll be loving you. With honour and love, I ask: 'will you marry me?'"

With the eyes of the entire university board and the audience on the couple, he drops to one knee and pulls out a ring.

But this is when things get a little awkward…

Visibly embarrassed, Assel, also 22, is seen turning her head away while he’s talking, and when he goes to give her a kiss, she gives him her cheek! Not happy Jan.

Assel’s body language as they walk off the stage is even more telling as she quickly finds her way back to her seat away from him and doesn’t make any effort to look at or touch him.

But it turns out it didn’t end all that badly for Ibragim in the end, with Assell later telling The Press and Journal she's super happy and was just in shock.

"I'm naturally a very shy person and was already quite stressed about getting my diploma on stage in front of all these people and then the proposal as well,” she says.

"My family is happy for us. Our relatives phoned us straight after the ceremony to congratulate us. I’m so happy. We’re happy to say everything is okay and we’re excited to get planning the wedding."

The video was captured as part of the University of Aberdeen's new graduation live stream. It was posted to their Facebook page but later taken down.
