Mum-in-law slammed for upstaging bride with dress

There’s one cardinal rule when it comes to attending a wedding: never, ever outshine the bride.

That’s exactly what one mother-in-law has been accused of doing after she left a review for a glittery sequined Gina Bacconi maxi dress on UK website John Lewis.

“Bought this for my son's wedding in Long Island this summer,” wrote the mum. “The dress is a perfect fit, and perfect length with high heels. The dress is stunning and so comfortable to wear. Friends have all said it is a beautiful dress.”

While this review might have gone unnoticed by many, one eagle-eyed user of Mumsnet forum spotted it, and decided to draw attention to this MIL’s choice.

“Just been looking at this dress, and I know this is mean but read the review and someone bought it for her sons wedding!! Wtf,” wrote user LardLizard.

The comment kickstarted a heated debate over the dress, with some thinking it was completely fine.

“Lots of guests wore similar dresses (with long sleeved jackets/stoles etc during the ceremony) for my friend's wedding (black tie) in a London synagogue followed by reception at a very smart hotel,” added another. “Everyone looked amazing."

Others weren’t quite as supportive of the choice, saying it was clearly too similar to the bride’s.

“Personally I think a lot would depend on where the wedding was taking place, when and what the theme was,” wrote one user. “For a traditional church wedding absolutely not, but for a hotel with a modern theme, why the heck not?”

“It looks like bloody wedding dress,” commented another. “Of course it's completely unsuitable.”
