Girl's amazing recovery from horror allergic reaction

A young girl who suffered a horrific allergic reaction was left with no skin and completely blind.

Isabel Olesen, from Melbourne, developed painful sores all over her body just 48 hours after having a childhood vaccination.

Her 39-year-old mum, Edwina, was horrified and after rushing her to hospital, she was diagnosed with Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS) - a rare but life threatening allergic reaction to medication or an infection.

Edwina first noticed there was something wrong with her 18-month-old when her skin was hot to touch and when red spots began appearing, she rushed her to hospital.

Isabel had the worst form of SJS doctors had ever seen and after being sedated, her skin started to blister and swell.

Edwina barely recognised her daughter and was distraught when just touching Isabel's skin would cause it to fall off.

"I'd never seen anything like it,” Edwina said.

“When I moved her head the skin from her eyebrows and cheek would fall into my hands.”

The burning smell of flesh is something mum of three, Edwina, will never forget and despite being told Isabel might not make it, she was discharged three months later.

"She was barely recognisable and needed to learn everything all over again,” Edwina said.

"Her eyes were the main concern and after recovering she was registered as blind.”

Despite it all, eight-year-old Isabel is now riding a bike, enjoying her second grade at school and has taken part in three triathlons.

"We're so proud of her now, Isabel has done three triathlons, rides a bike and rollerblades,” Edwina said.

"She's a little miracle and we're so lucky she survived."

In January Minister for Health Jill Hennessy spoke as part of a new immunisation campaign by the Victorian Government to keep kids safe, saying immunisations "have the power to save lives" and children should be "protected from life-threatening illnesses".

“If parents have concerns about vaccinations we want them to talk to their GP or their local government immunisation provider – don’t rely on unfounded and misleading claims on the internet that will put kids’ lives at risk," she said.
