Solution 1

Reading the top line, it’s pretty self-explanatory that 1 + 4 = 5.

To make the second line correct, it’s simply a matter of adding the first two numbers given to the previous line’s answer. So 2 + 5 + 5 = 12.

Apply the same idea to the third line to get 3 + 6 + 12 to get 21.

The final line will then read 8 + 11 + 21 to equal 40.

Solution 2

It’s clear 1 + 4 = 5, but you can also get the same result by multiplying the numbers together and adding the first number, so 1 x 4 equals 4, plus 1 equals 5.

Using this method on the second line, 2 x 5 = 10, add the first number of 2 and you get the answer of 12.

Try it again for the third line – and it works. 3 x 6 = 18. 18 + 3 = 21.

This means the final line will read 8 x 11 = 88. 88 + 8 = 96.
