William: 'Diana would be a nightmare grandmother'

Her sons have described her as “one of the naughtiest parents”, and it seems Prince William thinks Diana would’ve been just as naughty a grandparent had she lived to meet little Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The royal regularly speaks to his young children about his late mum, but is sure she would “cause an amazing scene” if she were alive to play with them today.

"She'd be a nightmare grandmother, absolute nightmare,” he laughs in his candid interview for Sunday Night documentary Diana, Our Mother.

“She'd love the children to bits, but she'd be an absolute nightmare. She'd come and go and she'd come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing... scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place, and then leave."

The 35-year-old Prince goes on to explain that his mother’s memory is very much present in their family, and he has a number of photos of her up around the house.

"I do regularly, [when] putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try to remind them that there are two grandmothers - there were two grandmothers - in their lives. It's important that they know who she was and that she existed,” he says.

William also takes cues from his mum’s parenting technique when raising his own kids, saying: “I want to make as much time and effort with Charlotte and George as I can because I realise these early years, particularly, are crucial for children, having seen what she did for us.”
