Who got William and Harry to open up about Diana?

For the past few weeks, stories of Prince William and Prince Harry’s memories of Diana have been all over the web.

The Princess sadly passed away 20 years ago and ITV put together a documentary - Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy – to honour her memory.

And while we’ve often seen friends and family speak out about the Princess, this is the first time her sons have sat down to chat about their mother.

Prince Harry, who was 12-years-old when Diana died, and Prince William, who was 15-years-old, candidly spoke about their childhood memories with their mother and what type of impact would she making in the world if she were still alive today.

And now the question on the top of everyone’s lips is: Who got them to finally open up about their mother?

According to news.com.au, it’s all about the connections the producers have made in the past with the royal family.

Nick Kent, executive producer of the documentary, and director Ashley Gething, were involved in two films about the Queen in the lead up to her 90th birthday last year and gained the trust of the Princes through that.

“We just sat down with them earlier this year and talked about the scope of the film,” Gething told the publication.

“I think initially, Nick and I thought that it would be a film looking really at the princess’ working life and working legacy, but in the course of that conversation with them it became clear they were also happy to make a film that was rather wider and reflected the memories and childhood experiences they’ve had with their mum.

“They were happy to make it a much more personal film.”

During the course of the documentary, Prince William and Prince Harry opened up about their mother in a way the world has never heard before.

They also shared a series of photos from Diana’s personal photo album.

Harry’s brother, Prince William, shows the Prince a photo of him being held by his mother and both of them descended into laughter.

“This one here, I thought you’d like to see – quite a special picture – the two of you which I thought was quite sweet,” William said to Harry, showing him the photo.

Ever the joker, Prince Harry took the photo and said: “I just remember having the skinniest legs, and still do.”

Diana had phoned them that night, but the princes were playing with their cousins at the time so they didn’t speak for long.

It’s a decision that’s played on Harry’s mind ever since, with the royal saying, “I have to deal with that for the rest of my life.”

"I do remember regretting... for the rest of my life how short the phone call was," he says, "And if I'd known that was the last time I'd speak to my mother, the things I would have said to her..."

Diana,Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy airs Sunday, 30 July, at 7pm only on Channel 7.
