Aussie glamour model opens up about abusive relationship

"At the end of the day it comes down to respect.”

These are the words of advice from glamour model Jasmin Shojai for women suffering in domestic violence situations.

The 23-year-old was crowned Australia’s top glamour model for 2017 and has opened up about how she had to overcome an abusive relationship to get to where she is today.

It was 2015 when the Canberra-born beauty found herself becoming alarmed when her then boyfriend’s pals started telling her stories of his violent past.

She admits he was a heavy drinker and got violent when he was drunk, but ignored her pleas for him to stop drinking.

“He became increasingly violent,” Jasmin told news.com.au.

The couple had been living together for six months when things took a turn for the worse one evening and he snatched her glasses from her so she couldn’t see and started pushing her around.

Her boyfriend spent the night in prison after a neighbour called the police but begged for Jasmin to take him back.

They tried again, continued living together and he even started going to anger management classes. But while the physical abuse slowed down, the verbal abuse continued to a point where Jasmin was too scared to sleep at night.

Jasmin says that in the end you have to “listen to your heart”.

“If you feel that you’re not getting the treatment you deserve, at the end of the day it comes down to respect. If you’re being really nice and they’re being rude back, it can’t go on. It’s not right,” she says.

Jasmin also credits the advice she got from counsellors at the Domestic Violence and Crisis Service that helped her end the relationship.

She says although it was hard at first, she eventually became stronger for it.

“I hope I can inspire women to know that you can come out of a bad place in life to become successful and achieve your dreams.”
