Dad proposes to his girlfriend minutes after daughter's birth

An emotional video of a boyfriend proposing to his partner just moments after she gave birth has gone viral – racking up more than 12 million views online.

The tear-jerking footage shows midwives handing Alizah Rodriguez, 19, her newborn baby girl, Ezrah, at the Albany Medical Centre in New York along with a note from her boyfriend, Devontae Gonzalez.

The emotional new mum can be seen doting on little Ezrah before noticing the card lay on her chest.

The cute handmade card reads: "Hi Mummy! I'm so glad to finally be here!

"But first things first, a couple of months ago while you were sleeping, Dad was talking to me through the "intermum" and told me to give you a message....

"But I forgot so I'll let Dad tell you. Congrats Mumma."

Still clutching Ezrah, a confused-looking Alizah then bursts into tears as Devontae, 23, drops down on one knee, pulls out an engagement ring and asks her to marry him.

The poignant moment was witnessed by midwives at the hospital and was caught on camera by Alizah's mum, Lizbeth.

"For some time I had wanted to propose to Alizah but I was constantly finding myself watching, other people's proposals and thinking to myself "I wanna do something really nice and big," Devontae said.

"Usually, I'm a very creative guy but I kept doubting my ability to come up with anything good until about four months before Ezrah's birth.

"As we were getting set up in the hospital, I stopped the delivering doctor and told her of my plans, and she was instantly on board and eager to help.

"The nurses at the hospital then had me write out what was going to be on the card, and very sneakily got it past Alizah to then type it up nicely and put it together."

"When the baby was placed in my hands, I first thought the card was just a formality because it had her footprints on it," Alizah said.

"When they brought it to my attention and I began to read it, my eyes began to squint as if i were about to cry but I guess I was so exhausted that my body just couldn't come up with the tears.

"After reading the card, my heart melted at the thought that our daughter helped him propose to me.

"Our relationship is effortless and time seems to go by so fast. He doesn't let a day go by without calling me beautiful and he's constantly expressing his love to me and making me feel appreciated.

"He's my knight and shining armour, my teammate, and my best friend. He constantly encourages, and he, along with many others actually made my delivery seem easy too."
