Why the royal rules followed by Kate don't apply to Meghan

Meghan Markle has opened up in an unprecedented interview about Prince Harry, leading many to question why the royal rules followed by Kate Middleton don’t apply to her.

Indeed, Meghan got very candid in the Vanity Fair chat, spilling all the details about how she is “in love” with Prince Harry and how they’re part of a “great love story”.

Things seemed to be quite different over ten years ago, when Kate Middleton and Prince William began dating, with Kate never speaking about their relationship in public and being branded “Waity Katie” by the media.

Since getting together with Prince Harry in July 2016, 36-year-old Suits actress Meghan Markle has remained silent - however her first interview shows things are clearly different for her than they were for Kate.

The first time Kate and William sat down to divulge everything about their long-term relationship was the day they announced their engagement, in 2010.

Meghan and Harry have obviously decided to go down a different path and speak up about their love for each other – and there’s a clear reason why.

Kate Middleton was set to marry the heir to the throne, the future King of England and the man who is set to rule one day.

The now 35-year-old Duchess of Cambridge was no doubt expected to act like a future Queen should – remaining quiet on personal matters.

Prince Harry however is currently fifth in line to the throne and with news of a new royal baby on the way for Prince William and Kate Middleton, he looks set to be bumped down to sixth place.

The Queen no doubt is still invested in making sure her grandson’s make suitable choices when it comes to their relationships, however according to royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, because Prince Harry isn’t a direct heir to the throne, she wouldn’t be as strict with him as she was with William.

“The stakes are obviously lower in the case of Harry because he is now fifth in line to the throne,” she told Vanity Fair.

“The Queen is remarkably open-minded and she’s very tolerant.”

“I would imagine that the Queen’s view of this would be: if they’re in love and they’re well suited, then they should proceed.”

Meghan Markle is perhaps able to be more open about her realtiosnhip due to the fact that she was a star in her own right before she began dating Prince Harry.

Markle has been a fan favourite on Suits since she started the show in 2011.

She’s been in the public eye for a long time, unlike Kate, who was a ‘commoner’ when she married Prince William back in 2011.
