WATCH: Donald Trump forgets Melania even exists

US president Donald and his wife Melania Trump have had some pretty uncomfortable moments in the public arena, but this may take the cake for the couple's most awkward incident yet.

At a visit to Fort Myers, Florida, last week to survey the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Donald passed on regards on behalf of his absent wife.

The only problem was, she was standing right next to him.

"I just want to thank everybody, the first responders, on behalf of myself, our Vice President—Melania really wanted to be with us," Donald said, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Melania was literally standing directly beside him.

Understandably, Melania looked slightly put out when she heard this. Although weirdly, not as put out as you'd expect.

It's not the first time Donald and Melania have brought an awkward tone to proceedings during their time in the spotlight.

Earlier in September we were treated to a spectacularly cringe-worthy show when Donald congratulated Melania with a sturdy handshake rather than a kiss.

The First Lady had been speaking to a crowd of military personnel and was then awkwardly shoved off stage by Trump who seemed to say, “you go and sit down now”.

The moment sent Twitter alight with hilarious reactions, but it wasn’t the first time the couple have had a less-than-perfect encounter in front of the cameras.

There was of course, that highly publicised time when the pair were walking across the tarmac in Tel Aviv, and Melania slapped away her husband’s attempt to hold her hand.

After another flight on Air Force One, the president was filmed reaching across to take Melania’s hand when she promptly pulls it away from him.

It was enough to spawn this hilarious compilation from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert:

But the awkward moments between the Trumps go back further than that! There was the time Melania had to nudge her husband to remind him to put his hand over his heart for the national anthem.

Then who could forget the way her Inauguration Day smile disappeared the second he looked away from her?

Or that time she appeared to flinch at his touch?

Body language experts have said the moments don't bode well for the couple's relationship, but judging by Trump's string of awful handshakes with world leaders, he could just be an incredibly awkward guy...
