Woman rewrites pamphlet on how a 'yes' vote will affect kids

A woman has rewritten a pamphlet that came through her letterbox from the ‘no’ campaign, outlining how a ‘yes’ vote would “change the classroom”.

Rhiannon Coulson took a red pen to the booklet, which was prepared by the Coalition for Marriage group.

The pamphlet is titled: “3 Ways Gay Marriage Will Change The Classroom" and tells readers: “It’s ok to vote no”.

However Rhiannon, who is in her 20’s and lives in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, had her own thoughts on how the pamphlet should read.

“Getting the pamphlet in the mail was pretty upsetting. To know that people believe your sexuality is perceived so negatively - that people would go as far as spreads untruthful propaganda to ensure that your right to marry the person you love remains illegal - is still hard to even believe," Rhiannon told Be.

“I was concerned the ideas expressed in the pamphlet, which are mostly designed to incite fear, would be listened to by some members of the community who aren’t able to reason between evidence based facts and plucked hyperboles.

“As someone who openly identifies as gay and is for the most part comfortable with her sexuality, it came as shock how affected I've been by the postal survey and the 'Vote No' campaign.

“Editing the pamphlet to reflect what I believe to be the essence of this debate, was a way to take out my frustration over these homophobic anti-equality activists.”

She took to Facebook to share her version of the pamphlet, which showed how she marked out everything she didn’t agree with.

The original pamphlet’s first point was how a ‘yes’ vote would have an ”impact on school”.

She added in the word “positive” and went on to change several of the sentences on the sheet.

“More and more kids will be taught their gender is fluid and not based on biology,” the original pamphlet reads.

Rhiannon changed it to: “More and more kids will be taught their gender is fluid and based on more than biology and that all people are equal and should have equal rights despite their sexuality.”

The second point the original pamphlet made was that a ‘yes’ vote would have an “impact on free speech”, with Rhiannon changing it to “no impact on free speech”.

“Saying ‘yes’ to same-sex marriage means saying ‘no’ to freedom of speech,” the pamphlet reads.

Rhiannon changed it to: “Saying ‘yes’ to same-sex marriage means saying ‘yes’ to freedom to marry the person you love, whatever their gender."

Rhiannon’s changes come after a teacher slammed the pamphlet for claiming teachers will change how they teach in the classroom if people were to vote ‘yes’.

“I can say with both spiritual and pedagogical authority that this is absolute bollocks,” Joshua Duffield wrote on Facbeook

“You know what teachers don't want to do? SPEND OUR PRECIOUS TIME TEACHING RADICAL GENDER THEORY.

“If I ever did get a spare half hour, I certainly wouldn't be devoting it to insidiously trying to turn your kids into cross-dressers.

“Maybe if your teachers had had more time, they might have been able to teach you the critical thinking skills necessary to spot exaggerated, biased, cherry-picked, fear-inciting, vote-grabbing propaganda when you see it.”
