Fashionista’s shopping secret has saved her $300K

A thrifty Brisbane mum has saved a whopping $300,000 by only ever shopping in second hand stores.

Stylish Hannah Klose buys absolutely nothing new except underwear, and uses the money she saves on expensive new threads to travel the world with her husband Dan, and two-year-old daughter.

The 36-year-old wardrobe is jam-packed full of stylish designer clothes and charming vintage garments that she’s sourced from thrift stores in every corner of the globe.

And amazingly, while Hannah’s outfits look good enough for the runway, she tries to never spends more than $5 on a single garment.

“I’ve saved more than $280,000 in my lifetime just from thrifting. I’ll never pay more than $5 for an item of clothing,” Hannah says.

“I would say 99 per cent of my family’s wardrobes are thrifted – the only thing I’ll buy new is underwear.

“The thought of going into an actual shopping mall makes me feel ill. Even if I won the lotto, I’d still op shop. It’s in my DNA."

Hannah, who works as a radio journalist, says she loves the thrill of a good op shop treasure hunt.

“Each shop you go into you never know what you’re going to find,” she says, “I’ve found designer denim jackets for $2 and I have a beautiful embossed Gucci handbag that was $6.”

With all the money she’s saved, Hannah has been able to spend her cash on luxurious holidays around the world, pay off her mortgage and give money to different charities.

In the past few years, the trendsetter has visited France, Italy and the UK, as well as travelling across the US including three trips to New York – where she admits the op shops were ‘very disappointing’.

Hannah has also relaxed on the beaches of Thailand and Bali thanks to her thrifty ways, as well as travelling around Australia and New Zealand.

“I always say to people ‘would you rather spend your money on brand-new clothes or be able to travel the globe and have new life experiences?’” she says.

“I know I’d much rather have a better lifestyle and be able to travel and own a house rather than wasting money on expensive outfits.”

Hannah’s op shopping obsession was instigated by her ‘mad thrifty’ parents, who she revealed would often go rummaging at the tip for pre-loved treasures.

Now the fashionable mum-of-one has even imparted her knowledge to her adorable two-year-old Josie – who loves op shopping just as much as her mum and jumps at the chance to score a bargain.
And clothes are not the only thing that Hannah sniffs out while op-shopping, admitting that nearly everything in her Brisbane home is sourced from different thrift stores.

“I’ve furnished our home with all sorts of op shop treasures,” she says.

“I have a collection of vintage lamps, gold framed mirrors and Persian rugs.

“Even simple things like our can opener, slow cooker and coffee mugs we bought second-hand.”
