The Queen sheds a tear on Remembrance Day

She’s known for her stoic stance at official royal engagement, but on Remembrance Day the Queen shed a tear for fallen soldiers.

The 91-year-old was flanked by her husband, Prince Philip, on one side and her daughter-in-law, Camilla, on the other.

They were watching Prince Charles, Prince Harry and Prince William lay wreaths at the Cenotaph on Whitehall in London.

The Queen broke with tradition and let Prince Charles take over what are usually her duties by being the main wreath layer.

Instead, she stood on the balcony and was seen getting visibly upset at the day’s proceedings.

Dressed head-to-toe in black and wearing a poppy on the left side of her coat, Queen Elizabeth brought her gloved finger to her face to wipe away a tear.

Prince Philip could then be looking in his wife’s direction, to make sure she was ok and give her an encouraging glance.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers told Reuters that the Queen opting not to participate in the day’s proceedings could have been because of her ‘stumble’ last year.

"One of the most important things with the queen as she gets older is not to put her in any situation where she might be uncomfortable or things might be difficult," he said.

"It requires a certain amount of standing around and then it involves the queen carrying something quite heavy and walking backwards."

Kate Middleton was also pictured looking sombre on the balcony, dressed in a long black coat and an impressive hat.
