Trump's most awkward 'group handshake' yet

Donald Trump may be a pro at using his hands to Tweet but it seems like he needs to brush up on his handshake skills.

The 71-year-old President of the United States appeared at the opening ceremony of the 31st Association of South East Asian Nations with world leaders this week.

However, when it came to shaking hands, the president was left completely flummoxed when the group tried to cross over hands – much like people do when they sing Auld Lang Syne on New Year’s Eve.

Flanked on either side by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, Trump just couldn’t get the hang of the handshake.

The “traditional” ASEAN handshake sees leaders cross their hands over their bodies so they can shake hands with two people at the same time.

The rest of the world leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, picked up handshake straight away before giving Trump an encouraging glance.

After some twisting and turning, trying to figure out where his hands should be, Trump finally locked hands with the others and beamed from ear-to-ear at his good work.

The awkward encounter comes near the end of Trump’s Asia tour, where he was criticized for failing to bow when he met with Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Trump also made headlines when he met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, where they engaged in an epic 19-second handshake, which spawned hundreds of memes.

Back in May, Trump’s awkward handshake with French President Emmanuel Macron was the talk of the world, after it appeared that Trump tried to release his grip twice and Macron just wouldn’t let go.
