The $14 gift the Queen gives her staff for Christmas

You’d hope that working with the Queen would come with a special little perk or two, especially at Christmas.

Her Majesty employs around 1,500 people in her service and is sure to bestow each of them with a gift during the festive season, but it’s not as lavish as you might expect.

Instead of a hamper or a bonus, the 91-year-old gives her employees a Christmas pudding to take home to their families.

According to the royal family’s official website, the tradition was started by her grandfather, King George V, and has carried on for decades.

But royal sources are now saying that this year, the Queen has seriously cut costs. Where once she sourced her Christmas puddings from high-end stores such as Harrods and Fortnum & Mason, they say that this year she has gone for a slightly more budget product.

Reports claim royal employees will be receiving a pudding from Tesco. Tesco’s Finest Matured Christmas Pudding costing £8 (AU$14), to be precise.

Those who have given their entire life to serve Her Majesty are given a little something extra.

Vouchers.

“The handing out of Christmas vouchers to staff is regiment, with the most senior household staff going first, followed by clerks and then domestic workers and gardeners,” Hello magazine reports.

We wonder if William, Kate, Harry and Meghan will receive their very own pudding this Christmas.
