No one wants their home to look like a hoarder’s paradise.
But after a truck load of Christmas presents and those bags of bargains you picked up at the Boxing Day sales, many of us are finding our places packed with much more stuff.
Fortunately, TV presenter and homes guru Shelley Craft, has a nifty little rule in her household that helps keep the clutter out.
The hack is as simple as not letting anything new into the house before you get rid of something else.
Now that doesn’t necessarily mean chucking it in the trash, but instead of holding onto old things that you’ll never use again, you’re better off selling it on Gumtree or donating it to charity to make room for something you will use.
“In our house, when something new comes in, something has to go out,” Shelley told 9Honey.
“New Year is a perfect time to get this happening due to the number of gifts and toys the girls received over the Christmas break.”
Of course, the best way to make sure you don’t accumulate too much clutter is to think twice before you bring something new into the house. As they say, the first rule of recycling is to ‘rethink’ before ever needing to ‘reuse’ or ‘recycle’.
Shelley says that instead of buying her daughters piles of presents, she gives them experiences, this year, it was tickets to the theatre.
“Seeing live shows is something that we enjoy doing and the memories last a lot longer than a piece of plastic,” she says.
“It gives us something to mark in the diary and look forward to and a topic of conversation for the rest of our lives.”
So there you have it, an easy way to keep the clutter down, and hopefully save a few bucks too!
