Couple blame rude bar staff for 'ruined' proposal

What was meant to be the ‘magical’ night British man James Bailey asked his childhood sweetheart Susan Wilson to be his wife ended after they claim bar staff ruined their night by refusing to serve them celebratory drinks.

James and Susan were visiting family on Valentine’s Day, when he decided to pop the question at the pub where they first met 20 years ago.

However after dropping a knee at The Glass House pub in St Helens, the couple returned inside where they claim staff refused to serve them any alcohol.

James claims staffers were fuming after their party left a negative review online earlier that night after Susan’s niece was refused service.

“They wouldn’t serve her because she didn’t have ID - but she wasn’t even trying to order alcohol,” James told the Liverpool Echo.

“She was just told they wouldn’t serve her and that she should get out. She didn’t even have time to come and congratulate us, she just got sent out of the pub and had to walk home on her own.

“It ruined what would have been a magical evening.”

It saw the couple leave negative feedback online while they were still at the pub.

Shortly afterwards, Jack proposed, and the couple returned inside to be told they wouldn’t be served.

While James admits they weren't kicked out, the group decided that without drinks, they might as well head home.

However pub management claims they followed correct procedure by asking Susan’s niece for ID, and were threatened by Jack and Susan’s party, so bar staff decided to cut them off.

“The group were unhappy with this and started to complain and a member of staff was then sworn at and threatened,” a Wetherspoons spokesperson told the Echo.
