Struggling to find a mate to hang out with this weekend? Well, if you’re over 25, there might actually be a scientific reason to why you’re running low on options.

Yep, a study published by The Royal Society shows that both men and women made more and more friends until they reached the tender age of 25 with social circles decreasing from then on.

The study analyzed phone records and found that the average 25 year old woman contacts around 17.5 people per month, while the average 25 year old man contacted 19.

But, by the time participants reached 39, these figures dropped – the average man contacted just 12 people per month and average woman, 15.

The study suggests that these higher figures in our early-mid twenties are signs of us trying to find our way in the world.

“The greater social promiscuity of younger individuals could be interpreted as a phase of social sampling,” the study states.

“Individuals explore the range of opportunities (both for friendships and for reproductive partners) available to them before finally settling down with those considered optimal or most valuable.”
