According to psychologist Andra Brosh, one word you should steer clear of is “never”.

While it may be a word that pops up in everyday conversation, Andra says this is a sure-fire way of making your heated conversation hit a brick wall.

"It's a way of shutting your partner out while leaving them feeling hopeless. It creates a sense of finality which leaves no room for further discussion," Andra tells The Huffington Post.

Instead of focusing on the negative, Andra suggests leaving the statement more open.

For example, instead of telling your partner, “You never listen to me," say "There are times when I'm not sure you're really listening to me.”

When it comes to other phrases that are sure to get a rise out of your partner, Andra’s other top pick to avoid is “I think you need to calm down”.

"This phrase aggravates a situation much more than it helps," she explains. "Telling someone to calm down is infantilising and it sends the message that your partner's feelings are intolerable to you."
