Backlash at Camilla 'butchering' the memory of Diana

It’s the new biography making headlines for its sensational claims Princess Diana issued death threats to Camilla Parker Bowles, and that Prince Charles was left sobbing on his wedding day because he chose the Princess over his former love.

Now royal watchers have slammed author Penny Junor’s novel The Duchess: The Untold Story for “butchering the memory of Diana” in order to paint the Duchess of Cornwall in a flattering light.

Penny has been unashamedly supportive of Camilla and Charles in the lead-up to the book’s release last month.

Claiming Diana was a woman obsessed over Charles’ relationship with his ex, the Evening Standard reports Penny saying that “sexy” Camilla saved Charles from a “rotten marriage”.

“They are a compelling and well-matched couple, fired by the same ideals, tickled by the same sense of the absurd,” Penny wrote in the Daily Mail.

“They are friends, companions and soulmates, and in the fullness of time, whatever her title, she will be by his side to support him when he becomes king.”

However the biography has come under fire for dragging the royal name through the mud again.

While it was hoped this would be the book that would make the public realise Camilla’s role in helping Prince Charles become the man he is today, it’s had the opposite effect.

“The surprise is that a book designed to prepare the ground sympathetically for the future 'Queen Camilla' should leave the overriding impression that the monarchy is a horrible institution,” wrote The Times columnist Sarah Baxter.

“Who can blame Diana for becoming a nervous wreck?” she adds.

The criticism comes just weeks after Harry controversially spoke out on the pressures of being in the royal family, revealing no one was eager to take on the role of monarch.

“We are not doing this for ourselves but for the greater good of the people,” he told Newsweek.

“Is there any one of the royal family who wants to be king or queen? I don’t think so, but we will carry out our duties at the right time.”
