Abuse survivor 'married' herself to celebrate 'healing'

A woman who ‘married’ herself on Valentine’s Day has revealed she’s now teaching others how to embrace ‘sologomy.’

On the most romantic day of the year, Emmajane Love, 33, made the unconventional decision to commit to herself to celebrate the end of a long recovery from a string of abusive partners.

The relationship counsellor told Studio 10 that she’d been on a journey of self-love and ‘marrying herself’ was the ultimate way to heal.

“I really made this commitment to put me first and get rid of the concept that I have to be married, and then I’ll feel complete and feel whole,” she told the show.

After deciding to get engaged, Emmajane bought a ring and made a vow to stay faithful.

“I definitely feel more whole and more complete and more like I’m not looking outside of myself for happiness,” she explained.

Taking to social media at the time, the singleton explained that she "hadn't planned that this would happen."

It might sound unusual but Emmajane is far from alone. In fact, there’s a growing number of women who are opting for ‘sologomy’ over more traditional relationships.

The trend has meant she’s been able to become a ‘celebrant’ in Bali for other women who want to walk down the aisle solo.

“All of these women have done work with me around healing and at the end, we’ll perform a ritual,” she explained. “It’s really beautiful, but they have to be at a space where they’re ready to commit to themselves.”

Though Emmajane has been ‘married’ for five months, she said she’s still open to other relationships – but isn’t convinced there’s only one soulmate out there for us all.
