‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’ escort was homeless

She shot to fame by anonymously revealing how she earned $500 an hour as a London call girl.

But it wasn’t always a lifestyle of luxe hotels for high-class call girl-turned-author Brooke Magnanti, who reveals being homeless saw her turn to sex work so she would never be on the streets again.

Brooke, whose Diary of a London Call Girl blog and books were later turned into a hit TV series starring Billie Piper, has opened up about her past in a revealing interview.

The 41-year-old research scientist was homeless for seven months while she was trying to get her degree at Florida State University.

Suffering from severe cystic acne that required nearly $40 worth of treatment a day, Brooke wasn’t able to afford rent.

She slept in libraries, crashed on people’s sofas and showered at gyms, and admits her fear of being homeless again saw her later turn to being an escort.

“When I was living in London in 2003 and ran out of money, that was part of the spur to go into sex work,” she told The Times

“I was desperately afraid of being in that situation again... I slept rough a couple of times and it’s such a frightening experience that I would have done anything never to do it again.”

Brooke infamously wrote her SecretDiary of a Call Girl blog and novels under the pen name of Belle de Jour, before her identity was finally revealed in 2009.

“I don't want this massive secret over me any more. It's changing the way I behave around people, the way I conduct my life,” she said a the time.
