‘What god thinks that's right?’ Magda breaks down on The Project

Comedian and actress Magda Szubanski made an emotional and compelling speech in support of same sex marriage on The Project on Wednesday.

The star, who came out as gay in 2012, broke down while recounting the difference in legal recognition between married and de facto partners – which committed same sex couples are currently considered.

“It’s not just about love, it’s about illness and death,” Magda explained, before recounting how the long-term partner of a friend of hers was battling cancer and needed to undergo a very painful procedure.

“She wanted to be in the room with her when she was having a painful treatment and the doctor said next of kin only; parents, siblings, spouses,” she said, her voice shaky.

“She had to stand outside and listen to the screams of the woman she loved, unable to even comfort her.

“Now in whose universe is that fair? What god thinks that’s right? I don’t understand it...”

The same was the case for newlywed British man Marco Bulmer-Rizz who was honeymooning in Australia last year when his husband David suddenly died.

The South Australia government refused to recognise Marco as his husband’s next of kin and shut him out of every decision that needed to be made surrounding David’s death.
