Man marries woman 10 years after she stopped him from taking his life

It sounds like the plot of a movie: A high school senior is about to commit suicide — but the moment he plans to finalise the act, the girl of his dreams calls him out of the blue and talks him out of it. A decade later, they’re married. Kevin Walsh’s heartfelt story became well-known after he answered a simple question on the Q&A site Quora: “What is one moment in your life you thought could only happen in a movie?”

The seemingly innocent question had well over 100 responses: One girl dishes on how DJ Khaled crashed her graduation ceremony and another opens up on how she met her real life Prince Charming at a ball — but it was Walsh’s story that truly tug at the heartstrings.

“I can’t not answer this,” Walsh responded. “Once upon a time I was 13 at a summer camp and the prettiest girl I’d ever seen walked right up to me and said ‘black is a good colour on you.’ No idea why. We chatted and became friends, exchanged AIM screen names (it was the time) and stayed in touch for a while.”

Walsh said the two lost contact for a while in high school, but not a day went by that he didn’t think about that girl.

“Even now I’m not sure I can say why – something about her just stayed with me.”

In his senior year, Walsh said he went through some “dumb high school stuff” that seemed earth-shattering at the time, and he fell hard into depression.

“I resolved to take my own life,” he said. “(I) wrote a note and went to where I planned to end things.”

Somewhere between five and 10 seconds before he would have committed suicide, his phone rang. He checked the caller ID (he said couldn’t die not knowing) — it was a number he didn’t recognise, so he picked it up and it was her.

“I asked her what was up and she said she just felt like she had to call me. At that point it had been a year since we had spoken, and at that moment she just had to call. Long story short, she pried, I spilled the beans and she talked me out of it. I mean she literally said ‘What? Don’t do that.’ And that was that.”

“She made me promise to call her the next day, and we hung up. That night I started writing the words which, ten years later, I’d propose with.”

His story has since gone viral. And to the joy of readers, Walsh shared some wedding photos of him and his wife — the woman who literally saved his life 10 years earlier.
