Are there really no 'nice guys' left?

He's not just Fitzy and Wippa's newsreader or a panellist for The Morning Show, FOX Sports, and the ABC - Matt de Groot is also Be's newest columnist. He'll be taking us on a deep dive into the world of dating... from a guy's perspective.

I’d be a rich man if I had $1 for every time Sophie Monk said she was single because there’s a lack of ‘good guys’ in the world?

And by ‘a rich man’, I mean, I’d have around $18. But that’s a lot of mentions in just two eps of The Bachelorette.

Seems there is a growing agreement among the single ladies that there are no genuine, decent fellas out there.

Let me tell you, that is rubbish. There are MANY kind, loving, caring fellas who single, eager and ready to mingle you off your feet.

Is it possible that it’s not always our fault things didn’t work?

We all have that friend that desperately wants to be in a relationship, but just can’t make it happen; they’re good looking, friendly and sociable... but then it doesn’t then make sense that meeting that perfect someone is so difficult.

They will be on all the apps chatting to a range of guys, going on a host of dates, and are open to meeting people at bars and yet still, nothing.

They have a good job, post lots of images of their smoothies on Instagram and love Saturday nights in with their cat.

Yet still, staggeringly, single.

And when you ask them, they’ll tell you that despite their best efforts, there are just no good guys left in the city.

Erroneous. Supplies are bountiful.

The problem seems to stem from the fact that the longer girls are single the more ruthless their culling criteria becomes,

Not men. The longer we’re single the more generous our criteria becomes. We just like to be liked, and who knows when the next offer will come along.

But women... Sheesh…

He’s not tall enough. Next. Only just moved out of home. Jog on. Bit fat. Bit skinny. Balding. Eww, too hairy. Doesn’t like cats. He has a cat (to be fair, that should be a deal breaker). Weird surname. Weird first name. I don’t want to date someone I met on Tinder. I don’t like guys approaching me at a bar. He added me to Facebook straight after we met. Creep. He hasn’t added me to Facebook yet. What’s he hiding?

The list goes on, it’s contradictory, and is increasingly impossible to weave through. Surely this is counterproductive?

So, when the successful, talented and gorgeous Sophie Monk rolled onto national stage and declared that despite her best efforts she just couldn’t find a single worthy, available guy, one could be forgiven for
raising one’s eyebrows.

Any man will tell you that she appears to be the ideal ‘someone’ and they’d love the chance to sweep her off her feet.

You’d even be willing to overlook the fact that she sounds more like the boys than any of the boys, because she’d be such a hoot.

Yet, strangely she’s still single.

And so, with Sophie as with the many others who keep saying there are no good guys out there – I say, bollocks to that.

There are plenty of us, just stop ruling us out because you don’t like how your signature would look with our name on date one.
