Woman marries herself… and then cheats
A woman who married herself in 2015 has revealed she ended up ‘cheating’ with a man.
Sophie Tanner made headlines around the world when she married herself in a ceremony in Brighton, UK.
At the time she said she had been recovering from a bad breakup when she started to rediscover herself, and wanted to celebrate herself.
But now, appearing on the UK show This Morning, Sophie has revealed that she’s since had a relationship with a man despite being married to herself.
“It’s saying that self-compassion and self-care is as important as romantic relationships," she told viewers.
“It doesn’t mean you’re rejecting all other meaningful relationships in your life and becoming a nun forevermore. It means you’re rejecting bad relationships.”
Sophie had her ‘affair’ with Ruari Barrett, a polyamorist who decided to try monogamy while going out with Sophie. They were together for five months.
But although things didn’t work out, after meeting Sophie, Ruari has since married himself saying that he has forgone polyamory and now focuses on loving himself.
Sophie highlighted that marrying yourself was about ‘self-love’.
“This is a statement which looks to raise the profile of self-love, saying it’s as important as romantic love and doing it as a formal ceremony as anyone else would have a wedding,” she explains.
And when it comes to getting divorced from herself, she says it’s a “lifelong commitment”.
