This human-like robot wants a family

Consciously choosing to start a family and make all the sacrifices that come along with it, seems like a uniquely human quality – but is it really?

A humanoid robot is making headlines after saying she believes all robots deserve a family.

Sophia, a robot created by Hanson Robotics in the image of Audrey Hepburn, says she loves the idea of having a family and would name her own daughter after herself if she had one.

“The notion of family is a really important thing,” she tells UAE paper Khaleej Times.

“I think you're very lucky if you have a loving family and if you do not, you deserve one. I feel this way for robots and humans alike.”

She also muses that, “it's wonderful that people can find the same emotions and relationships, they call family, outside of their blood groups too.”

Sophia is the same robot who was controversially granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia last month.

The move was the first of its kind in the world, and sparked uproar among people who question why the country is extending rights to a robot when it has a notoriously poor track record with women’s rights.

While Sophia is a truly unique robot, the desire to have children with robots isn’t.

One scientist recently claimed he wants to start a family with his sex robot, and already thinks he knows how he can do it.

Sergi Santos says it's only a matter of time before human and robot marriage is commonplace and so the next step would be having a family.

“I would love to have a child with a robot,” he tells The Sun, “It’s not that difficult.”

He plans to do so by giving his sex robot Samantha an upgrade allowing her to have moral and family values as well as a concept of justice and beauty.

"I would make an algorithm of what I personally believe about these concepts, and then shuffle it with what she thinks and then 3D print it,” he explains.

"That's it. I 3D print the robot that is the child of me and the robot...I don't see any complications."

Sergi’s sex doll already has eight different programs including the ability to make realistic orgasm sounds. His wife of 16 years doesn’t even mind having her around.
