Six questions you should always ask on a first date
First dates can be a nerve-wracking business. From figuring out where to go, what to wear and how many wines you’ll have to break the ice, sometimes focusing on conversation might be the last thing on your mind.
But for those who are tired of riding the dating merry-go-round, there are questions it pays to ask when meeting your potential mate for the first time.
“People are often caught up with themselves on a first date and they can forget the other person is just as nervous,” relationship expert Jacqui Manning tells Be.
“I encourage people to think of open-ended questions, so things that get the other person talking because that way you get to reveal information about them without even trying.”
With most of us pretty conservative when it comes to first dates – eHarmony reports only 24 percent will pucker up – here’s Jacqui’s top six questions to help figure out whether this one could be The One.
What’s your favourite movie and why?
The last thing you want your date to feel like is a job interview, so make sure you focus on fun things that could help shed insight into who your date is.
“[Asking about movies] can tell you something about their interests and why, their values, the things they like and don’t like,” explains Jacqui.
If you had a spare day, what would you do?
It’s tough making things work if you’re a F45 fanatic, and they’re a Netflix binger so finding out how someone spends their spare time can help weed out someone who isn’t on the same wavelength.
“That’s a good question to uncover someone’s hobbies,” says Jacqui.
What is it that you’re looking for in a partner?
Put out the long-term feelers without seeming too full-on by putting the focus on what your date wants.
“Someone might be looking for someone with a sense of adventure and the same values as them, while someone might be looking for someone to settle down with,” says Jacqui. “There’s no right or wrong.”
Where do you see yourself in five-years time?
“It might seem like an interview question but it can show the difference between someone who has even put thought in that question versus someone who’s never even considered it,” says Jacqi.
What’s the next thing on your bucket list?
This is the easiest way to find out what someone is passionate about – and see if you’re compatible, says Jacqui.
