Virgin falls pregnant with her first child at 29

In a scene that feels straight out of the nativity story, a 29-year-old woman who has never had sex has fallen pregnant – but not thanks to divine intervention.

Lauren grew up in a conservative, religious community in Canada, and has never had much of an interest in sex, in part because of a hormone condition she’s had from birth.

But as her 20s started coming to a close, she decided to become a mother, and instead of seeking out a partner or a one night stand, decided to remain a virgin and go down the route of artificial insemination.

She’s now expecting her first child in June, and doesn’t feel like she’s missing out on anything by abstaining from sex.

“Sometimes, out of curiosity, I think maybe I could try a random hookup,” she tells Vice, “but that feeling very quickly passes - I realise I’m not acting like myself.”

She says she doesn’t have much of a sex drive and even when it comes to pleasuring herself she says, “I tried it, and I didn’t really like it. Never did it again.”

Wanting a baby was completely different however, and Lauren says her deeply religious background had a lot to do with it – but not in the way you’d think.

“Basically this is me giving a middle finger to the people who told me I couldn’t do it [have a baby] because I’m not married yet,” she says.

“It’s the opposite of a religious reason. If you’re telling me I can’t do this, I’m going to do it anyway.”

Lauren has hypopituitarism which affects the hormonal messages that get sent through her body so she takes hormone replacements to balance herself out.
