Victorian Premier Announces Harry Potter and Cursed Child Coming to Melbourne

Hogwart fans in Australia have rejoiced at news that the acclaimed stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would be arriving in Melbourne in early 2019.

The play, based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, premiered in London in 2016 and had since been enjoying a sold-out run. It was set to premiere on Broadway in 2018. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement from Times Square on October 24 while wearing the gold and red colours of Gryffindor.

The Age reported that the show would be locally produced by Australian entertainment executive Michael Cassel, who was at the helm of Australian productions of Kinky Boots and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Andrews said the show would be running “exclusively” in Melbourne, but the Tony Award-winning musical Book of Mormon ran in Melbourne for months before moving to Sydney. Credit: Daniel Andrews MP via Storyful
