Stephanie Fish had everything under control and was looking forward to marrying her fiancé Bryan in May 2018.
But instead the Minnesota couple were married last month to make sure that Stephanie’s mum could attend the wedding.
Stephanie’s mother, Susan Gefroh, had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease about 10 years ago but her condition was worsening.
Originally the plan was to get married in Minnesota, which was a good middle point for both families, however a conversation with her sister made Stephanie decide she had to change her plans.
Both sisters were worried the 3.5 hour trip would be too much for their mother, who already had difficulties making small trips around town.
“She suggested we get married in Devils Lake (North Dakota) as that seemed to be the only way that my mum would be able to attend,” Stephanie told The Knot.
“I was pretty broken up about it, mainly because I never envisioned getting married in Devils Lake, nor did I think people would want to make the long trip to see us get married, but I knew she was right.”
Fiancé Bryan was very supportive and suggested they move the wedding up as they were already travelling to North Dakota in three weeks time.
Stephanie had 25 days to plan the ceremony and wearing a dress she bought off a store mannequin, married Bryan in her mother’s backyard.
“I wanted my mum to be able to be at that wedding and see her last daughter walk down the aisle,” she told Today.com.
“It meant a lot for me to have her there. It was a beautiful ceremony, and when I look back, I’m really happy with how it turned out.”
