Mum-of-two battling Stage 4 cancer at 22 has wedding of her dreams

Just six-weeks after Mikaila Brisbane gave birth to her second child, she felt a sharp pain in her right bum cheek and a lump the size of an orange.

Within weeks, the 22-year-old mum-of-two was diagnosed with Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma – one of the rarest forms of cancer in Australia, with only a reported 20 cases each year.

The Wollongong mum ‘froze’ when doctors told her the form of cancer doesn’t respond well to chemotherapy.

"That whole night I had that horrible feeling in my gut and high anxiety," Mikaila told Be, "but eventually as time went on I realised that if something is to happen to me and I really, really hope I survive, but there's nothing I can do about it. It's out of my control."

“They said to me: ‘Mikaila you have to understand this is a really bad cancer we are working with and the prognosis is extremely poor”, Mikaila said, talking about the moment doctors gave her the prognosis.

Mikaila met her now husband Harley, when she was 18-years-old.

The pair were inseparable and within months, she was pregnant with their first child, Indie.

Two years later, they welcomed Reef into the brood, but just six weeks after he was born Mikaila felt the lump.

“I went to hospital but they couldn't find anything,” she said.

“The tumour would appear then disappear. Not long after I discovered it was the change in blood flow and swelling.”

On Valentine’s Day Mikaila and Harley went on a dinner cruise, where Harley got down on one knee and proposed.

They were due to wed later that year, but in September Mikaila and Harley had to postpone their nuptials due to major suregery.

Fortunately, on February 10th this year - just before the anniversary of their engagement, the couple were able to have the wedding of their dreams, after meeting photographer Beth Fernley.

Together, Mikaila and Beth created the wedding the couple has always imagined, with the help of volunteers and businesses, who offered up their services for the day, which was held at Driftwood Shed in Terarra.

“It was the best day of our lives, I couldn't have asked for a better day it was perfect,” Mikaila said.

“I think it's a day that will be remembered forever and something my children will have forever, seeing their mum happy and well.”

Now Beth has created a GoFundMe page to whisk Mikaila and Harley away on honeymoon.

Mikaila would ideally love to hit up America and see the sights, but she also has a few other places on her bucket list.

The mum has also created a Facebook page, called Mikaila's battle with Alveolar soft part sarcoma so people can follow her story.
