Why have the Logies moved to the Gold Coast anyway?
The 60th Annual TV Week Logie Awards are upon us and for the first time, TV’s night of nights will be held on the Gold Coast.
While Melbourne has traditionally held the awards since 1969, it’s the Sunshine state’s turn and they are pulling out all of the stops.
So why the move?
Well, last year, the Victorian Government made the decision to pull funding after “extensive consultation with key stakeholders and a comprehensive event analysis”.
Meaning, Victoria no longer want to pay for the event.
But have no fear, the Gold Coast are rolling out the red carpet and no expense is being spared.
“It brings the tourism, it brings the people, it brings the glamour and the glitz – we know Gold Coast can put that on,” QLD Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said at the time.
“In fact, why don’t we rename it the Goldies?”
While the event has yet to be renamed, the Pavilion Ballroom at The Star Casino and Hotel is undergoing an intensive five-day transformation to set up for the awards.
However, main Logie production will still be based in Melbourne, according to the Logies executive producer Brent Williams.
“Channel 9 have freighted in equipment from interstate and flown up 100 crew, while about 370 were hired locally,” he said in an interview with Courier Mail.
Final touches are being put into place and the Goldie will be on full display.
“The TV Week Logies will showcase the transformation of the Gold Coast in recent years,” he said. “As a city, we aren’t afraid to think outside the square and leverage our unique location and lifestyle.”
So what can we expect from the new and improved Logies this year?
While the changes in location have been dramatic, there will be tons of familiar faces you will recognise.
Comedian Dave “Hughesy” Hughes is back as host and Aussie faves; Hamish and Andy, Julia Morris, Shaun Micallef, Georgie Parker, Carrie Bickmore and Dr Chris Brown are among the presenters in attendance.
You can catch the Logies on Sunday July 1 at 7.00pm on Channel 9.
