A look back at Kate's first solo engagement as a royal

Kensington Palace have announced the Duchess of Sussex will carry out her first solo engagement this month – four months after her and Harry’s fairytale wedding in May.

Meghan will attend the opening of the ‘Oceania’ exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts on Tuesday next week, September 25. She will view works from regions including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, which she and the Duke will visit in October on their royal tour.

Meghan’s sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge has been a royal for seven years now – so we decided to look back at her first solo engagement after her and William’s wedding on 29 April 2011.

Can anyone remember what it was?

Kate’s first duty, without her husband, was six months into her marriage, on October 26, 2011.

She actually stood in for her father-in-law, Prince Charles, when he was unable to attend a private dinner at Clarence House, in aid of one of his charities In Kind Direct.

The Prince had pulled out of the engagement to fly to Riyadh to offer condolences to the Saudi royal family, following the Crown Prince’s death.

The Duchess, wearing a crystal embellished empire line Amanda Wakeley gown, mingled with guests at the reception, which was held to thank funders and supporters of the charity.

”The Duchess had a little bit of time beforehand to prepare for the engagement – it all went very well,” a palace aide said at the time.

”She was so pleased that her first solo engagement was for the Prince of Wales, who has shown her so much support over the years.”

The Prince founded the organisation in 1997, which distributes consumer goods donated by companies to UK charities working in the UK and overseas, ensuring that no usable product goes to waste.

The Duchess is currently on maternity leave after having her third child Prince Louis in April, but she is expected to return to royal duties this autumn.

Kate will also launch her first solo charity campaign to help disadvantaged children, in the new year, according to the Daily Mail.
