Lottery winner loses $1.3m after ticket goes through the wash

A lottery player has been told that he is not entitled to a $1.3 million jackpot because his ticket was ruined when he put it in the washing machine.

The man, identified only by the surname, Sun, said he had been playing the lottery for 10 years when he suddenly realised that one of four lottery tickets he had bought was the winning ticket.

Sun, who is from the Qingpu district in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, said he was in a rush to find the tickets, and panicked when he found no traces of them.

But then he remembered he had left them in his trouser pocket, and the evening before he had thrown the trousers in the washing machine.

By the time he pulled them out, the cheap paper of the lottery ticket had dissolved into fragments.

When he took it to officials, they told him with regret that although there was a winning ticket they were unable to confirm his win without the ticket itself.

Instead, the $1.3 million (6.43 million RMB) will go back into the pot, and will be drawn again next time round.
