Why the Maldives is worth the 15-hour plane journey

The Maldives – a tropical paradise where crystal clear turquoise water, luxury beachside villas and delicious margaritas on tap is the norm.

It’s hard to scroll through social media these days without seeing a video of a poolside villa sunset or someone scuba diving while taking a selfie with a sea turtle.

For many, the Maldives is a massive pain and a half to get to. From Sydney it requires two flights, a stop-over in Singapore and a bumpy boat ride until you’re finally there.

But let me tell you, it’s worth the 15-hour trek.

There are many resorts scattered across the islands, all offering luxurious experiences, but there is one gem that stands out from the rest in my eyes.

Club Med – Finolhu Villas is the real life ‘Heart of the Ocean’ (love a good Titanic reference).

Whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, an anniversary, or you just desperately need a break from your demanding boss, the award-winning hotel is the perfect place to put your feet up and relax in poor bliss.

Unlike Titanic’s Rose though, (who definitely could have fit Jack on that floating door), guests will never want to let the hotel go.

Finolhu Villas is a part of the resort’s exclusive collection, meaning it’s removed from the hectic atmosphere Club Med is renowned for and offers more of a relaxing, high living vibe.

However, if guest want to a bit more energy and life, they can easily visit the nearby Club Med, Kani resort, which is about a 30-minute boat ride away.

I highly recommend checking out the white party beach party , which has great food and up-beat music.

The resort’s villas are nothing short of perfection.

As guests of the hotel, we were well looked after and was put up in an over-water bungalow #luckyducks.

Between the room’s private ocean access and infinity pool, which comes standard in all rooms, we became so accustomed to the glam life that we almost felt like we were in Mariah Carey’s entourage.

Club Med offers both sunrise and sunset villas that are sprawled above the ocean and across the island’s beach front.

After you’ve finished watching a breath-taking sunrise, the hotel’s all day activities are worth checking out.

Spend the day snorkelling or partaking in beachside yoga. Never done any of these in your life before? Fear not, the amazing staff will be able to teach you.

The scuba diving experience is incredible. And as an unskilled diver, I had no clue what I was doing.

The incredibly patient instructor had my back and taught me from the ground up.

The biggest tips I learnt: 1. breathing is required and 2. relax.

The poor instructor had to keep calming me down, as I’m more of a land person.

Guests are taken out to the nearby coral reef, home to an incredible array of colourful sea life – hello, Finding Nemo.

If you’re lucky, you may even get a glimpse of a sea turtle.

If you’re more on the adventurous side, activities such as sailing, water skiing and paragliding are also right at your fingertips.

What’s more important than unique experiences that can only be done in the Maldives? Food, obviously.

Club Med’s all-inclusive offering is what separates the resort from other resorts.

All meals and drinks (yes, alcoholic) are included in the booking fee, which means none of those unexpected bills appearing on check out.

The resort’s lunch and dinner service is what you’ll expect when you’re staying at an award-winning hotel – great selection of food, wine and fantastic customer service.

But the ‘creme de la crème’ is the hotel’s in-villa breakfast.

Your personal butler (yes, everyone gets a butler) will tailor your breakfast to whatever you feel like chowing down on that day.

The menu offers everything from bagels, fresh fruit and maple bacon to Japanese and Korean-style breakfast options.

It’s safe to say, the hotel has it all, but what makes it a favourite with travellers is the incredible hospitality shown to every guest.

During our stay, nothing was ever too much. From last minute demands to delays turning up to activities, they smiled back at us through our unashamed tardiness – who doesn’t love a sleep-in?.

Is this the most relaxing place on earth?
The best spas around the world

A lovely couple, we met has stayed at Club Med Finolhu Villas four times in the past, and that’s purely because of the humble and gracious staff – and of course, the incredible food.

A massive shout out to Neo, the lovely and talented yoga Instructor. Neo not only tolerated our terrible attempt at yoga, but shared insight into mindfulness, health and wellbeing.

She really gave us awakening to whats important in life.

So, the next time you’re booking a holiday, don’t let the travel time scare you away from booking the Maldives. It’s the ultimate destination for relaxation, food, wine and luxe activities.
