Matthew Newton emerges as father-in-law faces abuse claims from four women

Just as his partner’s father makes headlines for alleged abuse, Australian actor Matthew Newton has been spotted keeping a low profile while out and about in New York this week.

The 41-year-old star, who has been engaged to New York Attorney-General Eric Schneiderman’s daughter Catherine, was seen running some errands on his own on Tuesday.

Eric Schneiderman resigned from office this week after four women accused him of physical violence.

The 63-year-old said his behavior in the past has been approved by women.

“In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity,” he told The New Yorker.

“In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me,” he also said.

“While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time,” he continued, confirming he’d resign on Tuesday.

Matthew and Catherine appeared to make their engagement official back in 2016, when they were spotted wearing their engagement rings.

And despite claims the pair have split, a well-placed source says there’s reason to say Catherine and Matthew are still together, and in fact married.

“The breakup was just gossip. I saw them in early January this year looking happy with wedding rings,” the source tells Be.

The source also says Catherine has a good relationship with her dad.

“She is close with her father and regularly visits him,” says the source.

“She lives a short walk from his luxury apartment block.”

Meanwhile Matthew, the son of Australian TV stars Bert and Patti Newton, has been rocked by scandal in the past.

In 2006 he was arrested for assaulting then-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell.

Then in 2010 he was arrested for two attacks against his ex fiancée, actress Rachael Taylor.
