Matthew Newton may not attend Bert Newton's 80th birthday

Australian television star Bert Newton is looking forward to ringing in his 80th birthday later this month.

Speaking backstage at the 2018 TV Week Logie Awards on Sunday, the media personality revealed he’ll be celebrating the milestone with his close loved ones, though it seems son Matthew may not be there.

“We’re just going to get the grandkids together with my daughter and her husband and we’re going to have a birthday party,” Bert revealed to media on the night.

While Bert and wife Patti are planning to spend time with daughter Lauren, her husband Matt Welsh, and their four children, Sam, Eva, Lola and Monty, the TV star’s son Matthew wasn’t mentioned.

But it seems like the celebrations will just be a small family affair, miles away from Matthew who now lives in the US.

Bert insists “I’m not all that huge on birthdays”, and “it’ll be mainly for the kids because they love birthday parties.

“Our grandchildren are our life. So that’s how I’ll do it.”

Meanwhile Matthew, who is engaged to New York Attorney-General Eric Schneiderman’s daughter Catherine, has been spending time in New York.

Matthew and Catherine appeared to make their engagement official back in 2016, when they were spotted wearing their engagement rings.

And despite claims the pair have split, a well-placed source told Be in May that there’s reason to say Catherine and Matthew are still together, and in fact married.

“The breakup was just gossip. I saw them in early January this year looking happy with wedding rings,” the source told Be.

Matthew has previously made headlines after his prior high-profile relationships were rocked by scandal.

In 2006 he was arrested for assaulting then-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell.

Then in 2010 he was arrested for two attacks against his ex fiancée, actress Rachael Taylor.
