Meghan's Suits character had a troubled relationship with onscreen dad

The biggest royal news of the moment is the announcement Meghan Markle’s father Thomas Markle won’t be walking her down the aisle.

The father and daughter have been known to have issues in the past, and Thomas apparently doesn’t want to ’embarrass’ his Suits star actress on her and Prince Harry’s wedding day.

It would be quite a different scenario to her onscreen Suits wedding, where her character Rachel’s father, Robert Zane, was by her side as she makes her way down the aisle.

Having said that, even Rachel and her dad had a troubled relationship at times, and it makes one wonder, was Robert Zane based on Meghan’s real dad Thomas?

The first hurdle for Rachel was facing her father’s disapproval that she was simply a paralegal, and not yet a qualified lawyer like him.

Then the next issue was her dating Mike Ross, who as Suits fans would know, never went to Harvard Law School and is technically not a real lawyer.

Over time, Robert realised Mike was no harm to his daughter and became more approving of their romance.

Season seven was Meghan’s final season with the popular legal drama, and her character’s relationship with her father took a big turn.

One of the episodes earlier in the season showed Rachel and Robert go head-to-head when it came to the decision of whether to work together.

Rachel was adamant of forging her own successful career, and defended her decision to take the opposing side of a legal case, as she said she’s “not just your daughter, I’m a lawyer”.

When he then proposed they work together, she also resisted.

“I appreciate that dad. But I’ve also made it clear I want to make my own way,” she said.

But Robert had already spoken to Rachel’s boss Harvey and sealed the deal to join her team.

“You know, the last time we worked together on something like this was when you helped me with Model UN. I was Switzerland,” Rachel later said to her father, which actually seems rather reminiscent of Meghan’s real childhood in a way.

Fans may recall it was Meghan’s father Thomas who urged her to write letters to Hilary Clinton and Procter & Gamble after seeing a soap television advertisement she believed was rather ‘sexist’.

Years later Meghan delivered a speech at the UN Women’s 2015 conference, in which she spoke about the influence her father had on her growing up.

Later in the episode, Robert told his daughter he was “glad you put off that wedding”.

“What? I thought you liked Mike,’ Rachel responded.

“I do,” he then said, referring to her first nuptials with Mike which never went through.

“But you put it off to spend time on your career, and because of that I’m spending time with you right now,” he added.

The end of season seven sees Robert walk Rachel down the aisle for her successful wedding to Mike, however the latest word is that Thomas has shied away from giving his daughter Meghan away.

Though with the royals, anything can happen, and we’ll have to wait till Saturday to see how it all plays out.
