Mel Greig: The most non-judgemental form of exercise

I have discovered the most non-judgemental form of exercise . . . when you enter the room it’s like
there are no rules and you are free to truly be yourself and to be comfortable.

You know when you walk into a busy gym and you’re instantly aware that people might give you the
odd glance? In fact, you’ve probably slapped on some make-up and worn a push-up bra instead of
your comfy sports bra?

The levels of judgement can be high, which is exactly why I prefer one on one training, so I can wear my old baggy t-shirt and the same black leggings repeatedly and make unsexy noises and faces when the session gets hard.

Recently though, I discovered a place where no judgement is cast. At Bikram Yoga. I have gone to
Bikram for years but for the first time I’ve found myself gazing around the room to see who else is
dedicated to 90 minutes of feral sweating in 40+ degree heat and I’m noticing the people around me
more and what they’re wearing, I’m not judging them I’m truly fascinated by what I see.

The lady in the corner has kept on all of her jewellery. I’m seeing dangling earrings, a necklace, rings
and at least 20 bangles. At that moment I’m not judging her, I’m feeling in awe of her and I’m
thinking of my mum who would wash and sleep in all of her jewellery because she refused to take it
off.

To my left, there is a lady with see-through leggings on, every time she bends over I can see her
leopard print briefs and I start to smile . . . . I’m smiling because I am wearing identical knickers and I
have no idea if my pants go see-through when I bend over but I actually don’t care because she’s
next to me giving zero-f**ks about her see-through pants.

But the real hero of the class is the guy in front of me who is giving absolute zero of the f**ks . . . he
is wearing Speedos.

He is so comfortable in his own skin and in the safety bubble that is our non-judgemental Bikram class that he’s basically rocked up in the nude and you know what . . . I’m ok with the fact that when he charged forward he revealed his full ball sack . . . how can you possibly be offended when this 60+ guy is just trying to do his best?

He’s working on himself and he probably doesn’t even realised it’s popped out to say hello to the class because he’s too focused on his 10-second charge leaning forward towards the mirror. I mean, it does make my charge towards the mirror slightly awkward, but I’ll let him have this one and envy his bravery.

How much of a role does judgement play in our exercise regimes? Are there people out there that
want to take the first step into training but are embarrassed of the sideways glances? The fear of
getting changed in front of strangers? Using the equipment incorrectly and becoming a viral video?

You know what, I get it, I’ve been in that position too but remember this . . . Learn the art of giving
zero f**ks. Who cares if someone stares at you? That’s a reflection of who they are if they feel the
need to focus on everyone else but themselves, your health is your number 1 priority so don’t ever
let the fear of judgement hold you back #betheguyinthespeedos.
