Melania sends patriotic message in $4K frock

Though she was born and raised in Europe, Melania Trump‘s outfit for the annual White House Fourth of July picnic was as American as apple pie — and, given all that blue-and-white gingham, seemingly inspired by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

The first lady, who joined President Trump in hosting military families for fireworks and food, wore a floor-length dress by a designer long associated with Americana: Ralph Lauren.

Mind you, the Rivera gingham evening dress will set shoppers back considerably more than the standard Old Navy flag-print T-shirt; it costs AU$3,800.

In a move that might make some Revolutionary War historians raise an eyebrow, FLOTUS paired her all-American dress with a red leather bow-tie belt by Alexander McQueen — a label based in Britain. Originally priced at AU$1,200, it’s currently on sale for AU$680.

Last but not least, Trump turned to French footwear designer Christian Louboutin for her red leather flats.

She later tweeted a message sharing images from the White House celebration, which showed her twinning with President Trump, who wore a red tie and dark navy suit for the occasion.
